Name Sign Maker: Free SVG for Laser Engraving

Type a name, pick the lettering and the shape, and download an SVG sized for your laser: a red outline to cut and the name in black to engrave. No sign-up, nothing to install.

The file is drawn at this size, so it opens ready to cut. You can still rescale it in your laser software.

How to make a name sign with the laser

  1. Type the name. One word or two short ones work best. The small line under it is for a date, a family name or a room: “Est. 2026”, “The Millers”, “Nursery”.
  2. Pick the lettering. Four script styles and three plain ones. The preview redraws at once, so try them all with your own name: a style that suits “Emma” does not always suit “Christopher”.
  3. Pick the shape and the width. The name is fitted to the shape automatically, with a margin all round.
  4. Download the SVG and open it in LightBurn, xTool Creative Space, the Glowforge app or Inkscape. Set the red line to cut and the black fill to engrave.

What the file contains

The download is one SVG drawn at real size in millimetres. It has two kinds of objects, and they are kept apart by colour, the way most laser files are:

  • A red outline for the outer shape and the hanging holes. This is the cut line.
  • Black filled letters, already converted to outlines. You do not need the font installed, and the lettering will not change when you open the file on another computer.
  • A thin black border line, if you switched it on. Engrave it, or set it to score for a finer line.

The name is engraved on the blank, not cut out of it. That is deliberate: an engraved name works with any lettering, while a cut-out name only works when every letter touches the next one.

Engraved name or cut-out name

The signs people photograph most are the cut-out ones: the name itself, in script, cut from plywood as one piece. Making that file takes one extra step that this tool does not do. In a script font the letters overlap, so each letter is its own closed outline. Send that to the laser and it cuts every letter separately, and the name falls apart on the bed.

The fix is called weld or union: type the name in your design software, convert it to outlines, then merge the overlapping letters into a single shape. LightBurn, Inkscape and Illustrator all do it. Check two things afterwards: that nothing is thinner than your material allows, and that the dots of an “i” or “j” are joined to something, or they will drop out.

For cut-out names the font matters more than anything else: you want a bold script whose letters connect on their own.

Questions and answers

Is the name sign maker free?
Yes. The tool runs in your browser, there is no account, and the SVG downloads straight to your computer.
Can I sell signs made with these files?
Yes. The seven lettering styles are open-source fonts published under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use, and the shapes are plain geometry.
Which machines does the file work with?
Any laser whose software opens SVG: diode and CO2 machines alike. The file is plain vector shapes with no effects.
The size is wrong when I open the file. What happened?
Some programs read SVG units differently. The correct width is shown under the preview: select everything and scale it to that width with the proportions locked.
My name has a letter the lettering does not show.
The styles cover English and most Western European letters. If a letter is missing, the tool tells you and you can switch to another style.
Can I change the lettering after downloading?
Not as text: the letters are outlines. Come back, change the style and download again. It takes a few seconds.
